An Inspirational Story of Tupperware CEO Rick Goings

www.tranding.web.id - Who does not know Tupperware brand, especially among housewives. Tupperware is a well-known brand name of products for household appliances, including storage containers, serving containers and some other kitchen equipment. In Indonesia, so many airtight plastic containers are found, ranging from traditional shops to modern retailers.

Rick Goings is the figure behind the world of Tupperware products. The man born in Wheaton, Illinois, United States on October 13, 1945 is the Chairman and CEO of Tupperware Brands Corporation, a company that employs 10,000 employees with revenues of US $ 2 billion, aka Rp26.9 trillion per year (exchange rates Rp13,472 / US $).

Reporting from CNBC, Goings once shared experiences about the journey of his career success story. He told of his youth that behind his current success, he was a failed salesman, whose story was also posted in the title "Before I Was CEO."

Goings was born from a mediocre family, at the age of 17 after completing high school, Goings had to work because he did not have money to go to college. He also became a seller of the Grolier Society encyclopedia, by peddling it door to door. "I went around selling books, but for 90 days never sold a set," he recalls.

Despite the failure, the incident did not make him give up. For him, being a sales person is a noble job and deserves respect. Young Goings were never discouraged, he kept knocking door to door, selling encyclopedia books.

Finally in the summer, with a few dollars left in his pocket, Goings bought a loaf of bread. When he was about to eat, a pair of young men came to see him. He then offered his merchandise encyclopedia. But the young couple refused to buy, and then offered to enter the Navy.

Goings was interested, because the young man, who was around 32 years old, was a member of the Navy and had a pretty good house. Goings then enrolled in the US Navy in Michigan and was accepted three months later. The life of military discipline changed the course of his life.

In the Navy, he was forged in hard physical and psychological training. Including being taught how to become a leader, a great experience for the first time in his life. After completing all the tests, he became the platoon leader in his crew.

The Navy also gave him experience serving overseas, such as serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Vietnam. After years in the Navy, Goings chose to quit and resume his interest in business. He then worked at Dynamics Inc., a fire alarm manufacturer and seller.

But Goings did not want the experience of his youth to be repeated. He also contemplated how to sell directly which he considered less effective. "I can't do direct sales when I do it myself," he added.

In the military, he gained experience working in teams. So he formed a salesman team to build a sales network. In 1980, thanks to the tenacity and the new way of selling, Dynamics Inc., the success of it. Goings lined up to be the leader of the company.

Five years later, the beauty company Avon offered him a position as chief director at Avon Germany. After that he became Avon's vice president & senior operating officer in Asia Pacific, and finally became president director at Avon United States. The name Rick Goings also became the target of other well-known companies in the US.

Thanks to network sales methods, foreign experience, military discipline and work ethic, Rick Goings was offered as chief executive officer at Tupperware in 1992.

Quoting from Wikipedia, Goings is changing the way Tupperware sells, which is not only in the United States. He changed the Tupperware market to expand overseas with the target of South America and Asia, where Tupperware did network sales. Within four years, 95% of the company's revenue came from outside the US, with a value of US $ 1 billion.

In 2010, French President Nicolas Sarkozy was awarded the title Legion of Honor, for his dedication to increasing the role of women and children in developing countries through Tupperware. The Government of the People's Republic of China gave him the Marco Polo Award for his role in helping the Chinese economy. In 2013, Holmes Group awarded him the CEO of the Year award.

But behind the success that has been achieved, Rick Goings claims he still has debt. He wants to thank the man who recommended him entering the Navy. "If I can meet him, I will thank him".

Unfortunately, until now, Rick Goings claimed not to remember the name of the man and never met the person again. To express his gratitude, he used Tupperware as a tool to help others.
